Chelsea will not pay £70m for Real Madrid outcast

Chelsea are not interested in matching Real Madrid’s stunning £70m valuation for out of favour midfielder James Rodriguez, reports the London Evening Standard.

Madrid are keen to offload the Colombia international this summer to fund a world record move for Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe but are finding it hard to convince potential suitors to match their valuation.

Rodriguez has failed to make an impression on Zinedine Zidane since he replaced Rafa Benitez in January 2016 and was even left out of his matchday squad for their Champions League final against Juventus earlier this month.

Despite the fact the 25-year-old only started 13 league games last season, Madrid are looking to make a profit on Rodriguez after shelling out £63m for his signature after the 2014 World Cup but Chelsea aren’t interested in paying so much money for someone that struggles to make the bench for them.

Inter, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have all been linked with the creative midfielder in the past but Madrid may struggle to convince any of those sides to make Rodriguez one of the most expensive players of all-time despite his talent.

In the last three La Liga campaigns only Lionel Messi (19) and Cristiano Ronaldo (13) have scored more goals from outside of the penalty area, while no player has required fewer minutes per chance created in that time (min 10 apps) than Rodriguez (1 every 27.5 minutes of action).
