Mertens commits to Napoli

Dries Mertens is committed to Napoli and hopes to extend his current deal in the coming weeks.

Mertens, 29, has entered the final two years of his existing deal with Napoli and has spent the majority of his time at the club as a reserve.

However, the Belgium international, who scored a hat-trick in their 8-1 win over Estonia at the weekend, has enjoyed regular playing time this season following Arkadiusz Milik’s long-term injury and is now looking forward to signing a new deal.

“At Napoli we have lost a bit of ground,” Mertens told Premium Sport, via Football Italia. “It is a positive moment for us however, because we have scored 21 times but have conceded very little. I remain optimistic because we have a great team and we can still win the Scudetto. We just have to keep working like this because the results will come.

“Now we must think about the league and the match against Udinese. After the match against Juventus, we will now focus on the return against Dynamo Kiev. If we win the match we will have qualified for the knockout stages, so for the time being we will concentrate on this.

“I want to stay at Napoli, in fact I hope to renew my contract in the coming weeks.”
