Tottenham to battle Chelsea for Newcastle defender

Tottenham are set to battle Chelsea for the signing of Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles, reports the London Evening Standard.

Lascelles is a long-term target for Chelsea, who had targeted the centre-back at the turn of the year.

However, they won’t have a straight shot at the 24-year-old, with Tottenham now supposedly entering the race for Lascelles.

Spurs, who have also been linked with a move for Matthijs de Ligt, are keen to add another centre-back to the ranks with Toby Alderweireld set to leave after the World Cup.

Newcastle are reluctant to cash in on one of their prized assets and captain Lascelles and are believed to be have slapped a £45m price tag on the former Nottingham Forest man.

Lascelles made 32 league starts for Newcastle last season, with newly appointed Everton boss Marco Silva also believed to be a fan of the centre-back.

Spurs and Chelsea, though, are supposedly leading the way for Lascelles and will hope to convince Newcastle into selling the defender this summer.
