Wenger laughs off Lord Harris claims

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has played down the financial power of the club, despite reports to the contrary by club director Lord Harris.

Harris had claimed that the Gunners had enough money in the bank to sign any player in the world, bar Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Suggestions that there are £200m in the transfer kitty, however, are wide of the mark, according to Wenger.

"Helpful or not, it doesn't matter. He has gone a bit overboard because that's not true," the Frenchman said in his pre-Emirates Cup press conference when quizzed on whether Harris' comments were helpful.

"We are in a situation - I explained many times - where we are working hard if an opportunity comes up to do something, but we are not in the need.

"Last week I had to answer 'what will you do if all the players are available?' This week 'why don't you buy?'

"Last week (in Singapore) we scored goals and we did not have Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck, who are coming back now. We're in a position where we have a strong squad, but if an opportunity turns up we'll still do something."

Arsenal recently have been strongly linked with a move for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, which Wenger neither confirmed nor denied, despite the player's agent recently stating that the striker would "1,000 percent" remain at the Bernabeu this summer.

"1,000 per cent is a lot! That looks quite convincing," Wenger added.
