Pogba to be offered Manchester United captaincy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to make Paul Pogba his Manchester United captain in a bid to convince the Frenchman to stay at the club this summer, reports ESPN.

Pogba does not believe United are capable of challenging for silverware and does not want to waste the peak years of his career at Old Trafford.

The 2018 World Cup winner has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid and is keen to engineer a move to the Spanish giants to work under compatriot Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane has earmarked Pogba as a potential transfer target this summer but Madrid have no interest matching United’s £120m asking price and reportedly want the 26-year-old to hand in a transfer request.

Solskjaer, however, hasn’t given up hope of convincing Pogba to stay at United and plans to offer the midfielder the captain’s armband for next season.

The United manager needs to appoint a new club captain with Antonio Valencia set to leave when his contract expires in the summer.

Ashley Young is the natural choice having skippered United in Valencia’s absence but Solskjaer is willing to place his faith in Pogba, despite the fact he was stripped of the honour under Jose Mourinho.

Despite coming in for criticism for his performances this season, Pogba scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in the Premier League – his best goal return in a single league campaign.
