Wolfsburg win race to sign Dante

Wolfsburg have fended off reported interest from Leicester City to sign Bayern Munich defender Dante, the Bundesliga champions have announced.

Dante, 31, will travel to Wolfsburg to undergo his medical before putting pen to paper on a three-year deal with Dieter Hecking’s side.

“Dante wanted to have the chance to play regularly,” Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website. “We didn’t want to deny his wish.

“We want to thank Dante. Bayern experienced with him a very successful time with many great moments and titles.

“In addition, we know Dante is a very pleasant and friendly person. We wish him all the best for his future.”

The Brazilian centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Bayern since Pep Guardiola’s arrival in 2013 and could only make the substitute bench in their 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday despite being their only fit central defender.

Of Bayern players to have made more than two appearances in the Champions League, only David Alaba (92.6%) and Rafinha (91.7%) had a higher pass success rate than Dante (91.6%) last season, accentuating his statistically calculated strength of passing.
