Chelsea step up pursuit in Germany international

Chelsea plan to intensify their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz now the Bundesliga season is finished, claims the London Evening Standard.

Havertz has more than likely played his final game for Leverkusen after their season finished with a 4-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the final of the DFB-Pokal on Saturday.

The Germany international has emerged as one of the most sought after young talents in Europe in the last six months after exploding into form around the turn of the year.

Leverkusen have already confirmed they will sell Havertz this summer if they receive the right bid and Chelsea are the clear frontrunners for his signature.

Frank Lampard's side expected competition from Bayern Munich but the Bundesliga champions have already confirmed they can't afford the 21-year-old this summer.

After missing out on Champions League football for next season, Havertz is unlikely to stick around another season at Leverkusen to wait for Bayern.

Real Madrid and Manchester United are also interested in Havertz but neither are prepared to intensify their pursuit of the versatile forward just yet.

United are unlikely to make any moves for their targets until they know what European competition they will be in next season.

Havertz finished the 2019/20 campaign 12 goals and six assists in 30 league appearances but he really excelled in 2020.

In fact, the Leverkusen starlet played a direct hand in 15 goals in 16 league appearances from the turn of the year with a WhoScored rating of 7.57.
