West Ham are close to making a club-record swoop for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, claims Sky Sports.
The Hammers failed in their attempts to sign Gomez last summer and have rekindled their interest in the Uruguay international this month.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side wanted to sign Gomez in this transfer window but are now close to agreeing a £40m fee to sign the 22-year-old at the end of the season.
Gomez has a £43m release clause in his existing contract but West Ham have managed to negotiate a slightly lower fee by letting the forward spend the rest of the season in Spain.
Gomez has spent the last 18 months at Celta and has been a revelation for the Spanish side, even drawing links with a move to Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
Despite no previous experience of European football before joining Celta, Gomez has impressively played a direct hand in 35 goals in 55 league matches for Celta (26 goals, nine assists).
