Chelsea defender set to pen new deal

Chelsea have handed Branislav Ivanovic a new one-year deal, according to The Sun.

Ivanovic, 31, had entered the final six months of his current deal and had been able to discuss terms with foreign teams since the start of the year.

The Serbia international’s future appeared uncertain following his calamitous start to the season, with the likes of Inter and Fiorentina reportedly interested in his services.

However, talks are close to being finalised and the defender is set to sign his new Chelsea deal month, which will take him up until the end of next season with an option to extend it by a further year if he plays a certain number of matches.

Ivanovic, albeit a part from this season, has been a model of consistency over the last seven seasons in the Premier League. In fact, in that time the Serbia international has only made one error that has directly led to a goal for the opposition, which is staggering when you consider he is a defender.
