Roma enter the race to sign former PFA Player of the Year

Roma have entered the race to sign wantaway Leicester star Riyad Mahrez, reports Sky Sports.

Mahrez told Leicester in May that he wants to leave the club this summer but appears to have missed out on the chance of securing a dream move to Barcelona.

The Algeria international remains a target for Arsenal, although Arsene Wenger will only consider a move for the 26-year-old if they fail to sign Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.

However, Mahrez, who was voted PFA Player of the Year when Leicester won the Premier League in 2016, has now emerged as a surprise transfer target for Serie A giants Roma.

Monchi, who was appointed Roma’s new sporting director at the start of the summer, is keen to sign the Leicester ace as they look to bolster their offensive options in the wake of Mohammed Salah’s departure to Liverpool.

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare has already confirmed the club would be forced to listen to offers for Mahrez, but he won’t come cheap having only signed a new four-year deal 12 months ago.

Despite the fact Mahrez’s performances dipped for Leicester in the Premier League last season, only four players have won more WhoScored Man of the Match awards than the Algerian (12) in the last two league campaigns.
