Manchester United bid €100m for Muller, confirms Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich chief Jan-Christian Dreesen has confirmed the club turned down a staggering €100m (£84.8m) bid from Manchester United for Thomas Muller.

United were heavily linked with a move for Muller during Louis van Gaal’s period at the club as the Dutchman seeked a reunion with the Bayern ace at Old Trafford.

And it now appears that United were determined to land Van Gaal’s top target and willing to offer what would have been a near world record fee for the 27-year-old.

“There really was such a thing [an offer of more than €100m for Muller from United],” Dreesen told SportBild. “Then came a fax from England. For us, however, a sale of Thomas Muller was never discussed.

“If a player fits us, we would be stupid to give him a short-term prospect of a record profit and to weaken him.”

Muller has struggled to reproduce last season’s performances under Carlo Ancelotti this term and Bayern may wonder whether it would have been in their best interests to cash in on the unorthodox Germany international with hindsight.

The Bayern ace had scored 15 goals in 21 league appearances at this stage of the season last year, while he has only managed one goal in the Bundesliga under Ancelotti this season.
