Manchester City want England international as Mendy cover
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to sign Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell at the end of the season, claims the London Evening Standard.
Guardiola has admitted concerns about Benjamin Mendy’s injury-prone nature and is keen to sign a new left-back in the summer.
Mendy has only started 13 league matches for City since signing for Guardiola’s side in the summer of 2017 in a £49m deal from Monaco.
The 2018 World Cup winner is due to return in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Burton but Guardiola is running out of patience with the left-back.
City have now earmarked Chilwell as a potential transfer target despite the fact the England international only signed a new long-term deal with the Leicester in October.
Chilwell has shown great potential since establishing himself as Leicester’s first-choice left-back this season, illustrating why Liverpool pursued his signature as early as 2016.
Since the beginning of last season, Leicester have a far superior win ratio in the Premier League when Chilwell has started (40.5) compared to when he hasn’t featured from the off (21.1%).
