Manchester United to make De Gea best-paid Premier League goalkeeper

Manchester United are keen to push through a new contract for star man David De Gea and are willing to make him the best-paid goalkeeper in the Premier League, claims The Daily Mail.

De Gea has entered the final year of his existing United deal but Jose Mourinho’s side have an option to extend his stay at Old Trafford by a further 12 months.

The Spain international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent years but that transfer is now off the cards after the European champions signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea this summer.

Courtois, 26, will expect to see out the remainder of his career at Madrid following his £35m switch and now United believe there is nothing standing in their way of securing De Gea’s long-term future.

United are increasingly confident De Gea will extend his stay at Old Trafford and the 27-year-old stands to make in excess of £200,000-a-week, becoming the best-paid goalkeeper in the Premier League.

De Gea endured a miserable World Cup for Spain earlier this summer but the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper brushed those poor displays aside to play an important part in United’s opening-weekend win over Leicester.

Since August 2015, De Gea has kept at least four more clean sheets than any other Premier League goalkeeper (47).
