The top action in the Bundesliga this week kicks off tonight, with Bayer Leverkusen hosting Wolfsburg. Here we look at trends to watch out for in three of Germany’s top matches in gameweek 28.
It’s been something of an underwhelming campaign for both of these sides, who secured a Champions League qualification berth last time around. Both will still have hopes of securing a similar finish, though the Europa League looks more realistic. Expect an entertaining affair, with both teams on the scoresheet in all but one of the last 15 meetings between these sides.
In a big game at either end of the table, Bayern will look to put pressure on chasing Dortmund by extending the points gap to the Bundesliga’s second side to 8 points before Die Schwarzgelben’s match against Werder Bremen. Frankfurt, meanwhile, are embroiled in a relegation battle, in the drop zone by virtue of an inferior goal difference to Hoffenheim and Augsburg. New manager Niko Kovac will be aiming to end a run of 7 games without a single goal against Bayern.
The early kick-off on Sunday sees two Champions League hopefuls go head-to-head, with 5th placed Gladbach aiming to move to within three points of Hertha Berlin in third with a victory. The hosts have been the Bundesliga’s real entertainers this season, not only scoring the third most goals in Germany’s top-flight but also conceding the fourth most. Two goals in Sunday’s clash would see Gladbach become the first Bundesliga team to witness 100 goals in their matches this season.
