David de Gea is ready to deal Real Madrid and Chelsea a huge blow by signing a new Manchester United contract, reports The Times.
The Spain international’s current contract is due to expire at the end of next season but Jose Mourinho is determined to secure his long-term future before the end of the current campaign.
De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid in recent summers and the Spanish giants have earmarked the 27-year-old as a top transfer target, along with Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Talks between United and De Gea are progressing nicely and the Spaniard can expect to pocket in excess of £220,000-a-week under the proposed terms of his new contract, which is expected to run until at least 2021.
News that De Gea is close to committing his best years to United will not be welcomed by their Premier League rivals Chelsea, who desperately want to avoid selling Courtois to Madrid.
The Belgium international is currently stalling on a new contract and has already admitted his agent will listen to offers from Madrid.
Both goalkeepers are considered the best in Europe and it increasingly feels like Courtois will return to Madrid, where his children are still living.
De Gea has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, keeping an impressive 19 clean sheets in the process.
