Manchester United extend midfielder's contract

Manchester United have triggered their right to a 12-month extension in Nemanja Matic's contract, reports Manchester Evening News.

Matic, who was widely expected to leave United in January, has emerged as a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent months.

The Serbia international's previous deal was due to expire this summer but United have now secured his future for at least one more season.

However, United remain in talks with Matic's representatives and hope to agree a contract that runs beyond the summer of 2021.

Matic dropped completely out of favour during Solskjaer's first 12 months in charge of United but has been one of the club's best players since the turn of the year.

Benefitting from injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, Matic has developed a solid midfield partnership with Fred.

United have a win ratio of 54.5% in the Premier League this season when Matic has started compared to just 33.3% in the matches he has not started.

Furthermore, United have kept 14 clean sheets in the 20 matches Matic has started in all competitions this season.
