Silva commits to Monaco

Highly rated Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva has committed his long-term future to Monaco after signing a new five-year deal, the Ligue 1 outfit have announced.

Silva courted attention after a series of glittering performances in the European U’21 Championship’s earlier this summer, where he was awarded Uefa’s player of the tournament as Portugal finished as losing finalists.

Monaco signed the attacking midfielder on a permanent deal from Benfica for £11.12m in January and the 21-year-old is “very happy” to continue his development on the French Riviera.

“I am very happy to extend my contract with AS Monaco because it’s the club that allowed me to show my worth and to discover the UEFA Champions League,” Silva told the club’s official website.

Silva was deserving of his player of the tournament award in the Czech Republic. In fact, the Portuguese forward completed at least 13 more dribbles than any other player in the tournament (27).
