Real Madrid have agreed terms with Inter for Mateo Kovacic, with the midfielder now set to undergo his medical before putting pen to paper on a six-year deal, the La Liga giants have announced.
Kovacic has been heavily linked with a move away from the San Siro this summer and had looked destined to join Liverpool until Madrid made a surprise move for the Croatian midfielder.
Madrid have announced the 21-year-old will officially be unveiled in a celebratory ceremony on Wednesday after completing his medical ahead of what is believed to be a deal worth up to €35m (£24.6m).
Rafa Benitez’s interest in the midfielder is surprising when you consider the options he already possesses in central midfield areas. While the Croatian is not expected to immediately force his way into the starting XI, he does arrive with immense potential.
In fact, Kovacic played at least two more accurate through balls (11) than any other player in Serie A last seaso, despite only starting 26 games.
