Manchester United fail with £72m offer for Monaco star

Monaco have rejected a staggering £72m offer from Manchester United for teenager Kylian Mbappe, reports The Guardian.

Mbappe has emerged as a real superstar in the making this season for the Principality Club and has been linked with a big money move to almost every major European side this summer.

Real Madrid have been regularly linked with the France international but United appear to be trying to beat their European rivals after failing with an initial £72m for Mbappe, which would have made him the most expensive teenager of all time.

Monaco are reluctant to lose their star striker but realise they could fetch a phenomenal fee for his services and will not entertain any offers south of £100m, which would surpass the fee United paid Juventus to re-sign Paul Pogba last summer.

Jose Mourinho has been forced to review his summer transfer plans in the wake of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s serious knee injury and now wants to sign another striker in addition to Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann.

Mbappe has scored 24 goals in 39 appearances for Monaco this season in all competitions, while only Cristiano Ronaldo (8) has scored more times in the knockout phase of this season’s Champions League than the Frenchman (5).
