Alvaro Morata has moved to clear any confusion about his commitment to Chelsea by revealing he would signed a 10-year deal with the club.
The Spain international gave an interview to an Italian publication earlier this week in which he conceded he does not envisage a long-term future in ‘stressful’ London.
However, Morata claims that his words have been misinterpreted and that he actually meant he will not live in London after his playing career has finished.
Chelsea made the 25-year-old the club’s most expensive ever signing when they paid Real Madrid £60m over the summer and Morata insists he is fully committed to the club.
“I want to say that we had a problem of understanding in this interview,” the London Evening Standard quote Morata as saying before Chelsea’s match with Roma on Tuesday. “If Chelsea proposed me 10 years I’d probably sign that too.
“I’m happy with this club, in this city, with everything in London. I really like London, and probably, if I make good and improve, probably I can stay here more than five years. But I need to score many goals otherwise Chelsea will buy another player. It’s normal.
“I want to say, probably in the future when I finish my career, I won’t live in London. But now, at the moment, I’m very happy in London and enjoy living in London with my wife.”
“Probably in the future, when I need to bring my child to the school and take up a school, when I finish my career, I’d prefer to come back to my country. It’s normal. For me, I prefer the place I was born.
“But now I’m very happy. When I say it’s a stressful city, I’m only talking about the traffic and that there are a lot of people. But it’s an incredibly city with many religions and many kinds of different people, so I really enjoy London.”
Morata has made a flying start to life at Chelsea and his form has made it easy to forget about Diego Costa, who has returned to Atletico Madrid.
In fact, the Spaniard has played a direct hand in 50% of Chelsea’s 18 Premier League goals this season (six goals, three assists).
