Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is interested in reuniting with Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic at Old Trafford next season, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Mourinho had earmarked Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier as one of his top transfer targets but there is reportedly a growing acceptance that dealing with Daniel Levy could prove too problematic and now they could switch their attentions to Matic.
The Serbia international has returned to his best form this season for Premier League champions Chelsea but playing time diminished over the course of the campaign as Cesc Fabregas returned to favour under Antonio Conte.
The Chelsea boss is also expected to strengthen his midfield in the summer with a deal to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko mooted and this could play into United’s hands, who believe there is a chance of luring Matic away from Stamford Bridge.
In the last three Premier League campaigns only four midfielders have won more tackles than Matic (264).
