Gareth Southgate has told Wayne Rooney he will remain England captain during his time as manager, according to BBC Sport.
The England Under-21 manager was promoted to manage the senior team through the next four matches following Sam Allardyce’s dismissal.
Rooney’s place in the Manchester United has come into question after Jose Mourinho dropped the forward in their last two matches but Southgate has given the 31-year-old reassurances about his role with the national team.
The United skipper came off the bench in the Europa League on Thursday and set up Zlatan Ibrahimovic with his second touch to help his side to a 1-0 win over Zorya and earn just their third win in nine Europa League matches in their history.
