Manchester United and Manchester City want RB Leipzig star

Manchester United and Manchester City have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, claims Sky Sports.

Upamecano is widely expected to leave RB Leipzig this summer when he will only have 12 months left to run on his current contract.

The highly rated 21-year-old has been immense for Leipzig this season, bouncing back from a disappointing 2018/19 campaign.

Arsenal were interested in Upamecano last summer but have since signed William Saliba and Pablo Mari from Saint-Etienne and Flamengo, respectively.

With Phil Jones and Chris Smalling set to depart United at the end of the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be in the market for at least one centre-back this summer.

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, has made signing a defender a top priority this summer following their woes at the back this summer.

Upamecano has a release clause of €60M (£52.5m) in his current Leipzig contract but any interested suitor will look to pay less than that.

With transfer valuations expected to tumble as a result of COVID-19, coupled with the fact Upamecano has just over 12 months to run on his current deal, a lesser fee is expected.

The France Under-21 international is currently in the WhoScored Team of the Season in the Bundesliga withn an impressive rating of 7.23.
