Manchester United risk losing trusted midfielder for nothing
Manchester United are running the risk of losing Marouane Fellaini for nothing at the end of the season as they continue to negotiate a new deal for the midfielder, claims ESPN.
Fellaini’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and the Belgium international has already turned down a fresh offer from the club this season.
The 29-year-old will be free to discuss terms to a pre-contractual agreement with foreign clubs in 53 days and United are now running out of time to resolve his future.
Fellaini has established himself as an important player under Jose Mourinho and the United manager wants to keep him at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season.
However, Fellaini knows that his next contract will likely be the last big one of his career and will not commit to a new United deal unless the terms that he can get elsewhere are met.
Fellaini returned to first-team action for United in their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend after missing the previous six matches through injury.
Despite being limited to just three Premier League starts this season, only Romelu Lukaku (7) and Marcus Rashford (4) have scored more goals for United than Fellaini (3).
In fact, Fellaini has already scored more league goals this season than in his two previous campaigns combined (2).
