Manchester United rejected the chance to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £60m asking price for Marco Reus in the deal that saw Adnan Januzaj go the other way, claims ESPN.
Januzaj, 20, joined Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season on Monday and it has now emerged that United tried to include Reus in the deal.
Louis van Gaal has been desperate to sign a marquee player that can transform his side into genuine title contenders, but was not prepared to go any higher than £50m.
Instead, United have opted to Monaco striker Anthony Martial the world’s most expensive teenager in a deal that could end costing just shy of £60m.
Reus, 26, is regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation and has courted interest from a number of European clubs in the last two years. In fact, the Germany international has made at least 13 more assists than any of his teammates since he joined Dortmund in 2012 (27).
