Manchester United set to make first signing of the summer

Manchester United are closing in on their first signing of the summer after triggering Diogo Dalot’s €20m (£17.5m) release clause, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Porto have tried to renew Dalot’s contract over the past 12 months in order to increase his current release clause, but are now resigned to losing the 20-year-old.

United have reportedly already agreed personal terms with the Portugal Under-21 international and are poised to make a formal announcement by the end of the week.

Jose Mourinho has been mindful of signing a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia in the last 12 months but had struggled to nail down a first choice transfer target.

United scouted Dalot during Porto’s Champions League quarter-final second leg draw with Liverpool at Anfield and the youngster impressed, earning a WhoScored rating of 7.55.

Mourinho has now settled on Dalot and will make the versatile Porto defender his first signing of the summer, signalling the end of Matteo Darmian’s time at the club.

Excluding substitute appearances, Dalot finished the season with a WhoScored rating of 7.14 in five starts across league and European competition.
