Player Ratings: Brazil 2-0 Mexico - Premier League midfielder the star man

WhoScored.com walk through the ratings as Brazil earn a 2-0 win over Mexico to secure a spot in the quarter-finals...

BRAZIL - 7.27

Alisson - 6.77 - Not entirely convincing but relatively untested, forced into just one save and only his third of the entire tournament.

Fagner - 7.28 - Struggled early on but grew into the game and eventually kept Lozano under wraps in the second half with five tackles.

Thiago Silva - 7.34 - Solid at the back having been handed the armband, completing seven clearances and 91% of his passes.

Miranda - 7.22 - Didn’t have a great deal to do but was assured alongside Silva and blocked two shots.

Filipe Luis - 6.88 - Looked in trouble against Lozano in the first half so will have been happy to see the winger switch flanks and improved defensively thereafter.

Willian - 9.27 (Man of the Match) - Outstanding in the second half, completing seven dribbles in the game and registering the assist for Neymar’s opener with one of three key passes.

Paulinho - 6.57 - A quiet game in the middle of the park, Paulinho had just 38 touches and perhaps should have scored in the second half.

Casemiro - 7.86 - Played well, creating three chances and completing six tackles but picked up a costly booking to rule him out of the quarter-final.

Philippe Coutinho - 6.94 - A subdued outing after an excellent group stage performance, had a decent chance to add to his two goals at the tournament saved by Ochoa, which was his only effort of five on target.

Neymar - 8.57 - A simple finish for the opener but excellent work in the build up. Hit the target with four of seven shots and created five chances but embarrassed himself with more histrionics in the second half.

Gabriel Jesus - 7.24 - Another frustrating afternoon for the forward, who worked as hard as ever but carried relatively little threat in front of goal.

Subs: Roberto Firmino (7.09), Fernandinho (6.53), Marquinhos (6.12)

MEXICO – 6.45

Guillermo Ochoa – 7.84 - Mexico started brightly but ended up relying heavily on goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. He conceded twice, but made eight saves to keep Mexico within touching distance.

Edson Alvarez – 6.08 - The 20-year-old made a brilliant tackle to rob Neymar off the ball in his own box but struggled to influence the game from right-back before being subbed for Jonathan dos Santos as Mexico looked for a goal.

Carlos Salcedo – 6.18 - The Mexico centre-back coped well with what Brazil had to offer in the opening exchange and kept Gabriel Jesus relatively quiet, making three clearances, blocking two shots and winning one aerial duel.

Hugo Ayala – 6.56 - The experienced defender was the more involved Mexican centre-back against Brazil, completing five tackles and interceptions combined and making a further four clearances.

Jesus Gallardo – 6.45 - Jesus Gallardo spent most of the game defending. He started brightly but faded in the second half as Willian began to dominate on the right flank for Brazil.

Hector Herrera – 5.88 - The 28-year-old finished as Mexico’s lowest rated starter and spent most of the game committing fouls. In fact, no player has committed more fouls in a game at the 2018 World Cup than Herrera (7).

Rafael Marquez – 6.59 - The 39-year-old was a shock inclusion from the start for Mexico but struggled to influence the game in the middle of the park. Was hooked at half-time, in what proved his final ever World Cup appearance.

Andres Guardado – 6.39 - The game seemed to bypass Mexico’s midfield for the majority of the match, but Guardado was at least economical in possession, completing 92.5% of their passes.

Hirving Lozano – 7.00 - The 22-year-old looked really dangerous in the opening 30 minutes and had the beating of Brazilian full-backs Fagner and Filipe Luis. He completed six dribbles, but five of those came in the first half. He disappeared after the break.

Javier Hernandez – 5.94 - Mexico enjoyed early success on the flanks but failed to get Javier Hernandez involved. He was limited to 13 touches in 59 minutes and was forced to come deep in search of possession.

Carlos Vela – 7.10 - The 29-year-old was Mexico’s best outfielder, forging four goalscoring opportunities. Like Lozano, however, he ran out of gas towards the end of the match.

Subs: Raul Jimenez (5.85), Jonathan dos Santos (6.22) and Miguel Layun (6.24)
