Sancho, Werner and Lewandowski make Bundesliga 2019/20 best XI

The Bundesliga season drew to a close on Saturday and with just the relegation-promotion playoff and next week's DFB-Pokal final to play for, it's time to look at WhoScored.com's Bundesliga team of the season. The top four - Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Gladbach - dominate the best XI, with a couple of names sure to appeal to Inter, Manchester United and Chelsea fans...

Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer (Gladbach) - 6.79 rating

The sole Gladbach representative to fetaure in the WhoScored Bundesliga team of the season, Yann Sommer occupies the spot between the sticks with a WhoScored rating of 6.79. While the Swiss shotstopper kept just seven clean sheets, the experienced goalkeeper was vital as Gladbach secured a Champions League finish, making more saves (118) and mustering a better save success rate (75.5%) than any other Bundesliga goalkeeper in 2019/20 to secure his spot in this XI.

Right-back: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.31 rating

Inter fans will be thrilled to see Achraf Hakimi feature in the Bundesliga team of the season. The Moroccan is on the cusp of a move to the Italian outfit and makes the cut at right-back with a WhoScored rating of 7.31. Thriving in a more advanced attacking role, Hakimi put up fine returns of five goals and 10 assists in his second and final season with Borussia Dortmund. Two tackles and one interception per 90 contributed towards his inclusion in the Bundesliga best XI of 2019/20.

Centre-back: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.11 rating

The second of three Borussia Dortmund representatives, Mats Hummels may have been unable to help Lucien Favre's side to the title, but the German centre-back was solid nontheless for the Bundesliga runners' up. Routinely showcasing a statistically calculated WhoScored strength of 'aerial duels', Hummels yielded an aerial success rate of 66.2% to help him to a WhoScored rating of 7.11.

Centre-back: Marcel Halstenberg (RB Leipzig) - 7.15 rating

Joining Hummels at the heart of the defence is RB Leipzig's Marcel Halstenberg. A left-back by trade, the German transitioned to centre-back with ease when head coach Julian Nagelsmann elected to move to a three-man backline. All in all, the 28-year-old had a direct hand in six league goals this season while 1.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per 90 saw Halstenberg yield a WhoScored rating of 7.15.

Left-back: Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 7.52 rating

The first Bayern Munich inclusion is, without doubt, the Bundesliga's best left-back. 19-year-old Alphonso Davies enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season as his WhoScored rating (7.52) suggests. Deployed in defence, the teenager was unfazed at the demands that came with playing at the back, utilising his exceptional dribbling ability from left-back to complete the second most dribbles (82) in the Bundesliga this season.

Right midfield: Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 7.49 rating

Having had a direct hand in 22 league goals, and one of only three players to register double figures for both goals (12) and assists (10) in the Bundesliga this season, Serge Gnabry kicks off his midfield having yielded a WhoScored rating of 7.49. Exceptional in the final third, Gnabry ranked second for big chances created (23) to help justify his inclusion in this team.

Central midfield: Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) - 7.42 rating

Pipping Gnabry to top spot for big chances created is Thomas Muller (32). Having struggled for game time under Niko Kovac, Muller took his game to the next level when Hansi Flick took over the Allianz Arena reins and ended the season with 21 league assists, a Bundesliga record. 84 key passes was more than any other player as Muller features in midfield with a WhoScored rating of 7.42.

Central midfield: Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) - 7.40 rating

Continuing the Bayern theme and partnering Muller in the middle of the park, Joshua Kimmich controlled proceedings in the middle of the park with ease for the champions. The 25-year-old made more accurate passes (2295) than any other midfielder in the Bundesliga this season, while a pass success rate of 90.1% ranked among the top 10 players in Germany's top tier as Kimmich makes the team of the season with a WhoScored rating of 7.40.

Left midfield: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.64 rating

The third and final Borussia Dortmund player to feature in the Bundesliga team of the season, Jadon Sancho's WhoScored rating (7.64) was the second best in the top-flight of German football in 2019/20. Like Gnabry, Sancho was one of three players to register double figures for both goals (17) and assists (16) in the Bundesliga this season and ranked among the top three players for big chances created (19), successful dribbles (77) and man of the match awards (7).

Sancho, Werner and Lewandowski make Bundesliga 2019/20 best XI

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 8.13 rating

The winner of the Torjägerkanone with a whopping 34 league goals to his name, Robert Lewandowski was unable to match Gerd Muller's record of 40 goals in a Bundesliga season, but he gave it as good a shot - no pun intended - as any. The Pole had more shots (138) than any other Bundesliga player in 2019/20 and scored more clear-cut goalscoring chances (30) than any other player in Germany's top tier this term. With a WhoScored rating of 8.13, Lewandowski is the WhoScored player of the Bundesliga season.

Striker: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) - 7.60 rating

Rounding off the team of the season, Chelsea fans will have been excited to see Timo Werner's final appearance as he bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Augsburg to take his league goal total for the campaign to 28. With an additional eight assists, only Lewandowski (38) had a direct hand in more goals than Werner (36) in the Bundesliga this season, while 10 WhoScored man of the match awards was more than any other player as the German rounds off the best XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.60.
