Mbappe leads Ligue 1 Team of the Season dominated by Brest
Following the culmination of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season, we take a look at the best rated XI from the campaign with PSG, Brest, Monaco, Marseille and Montpellier all represented.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG) - 7.14
Gianluigi Donnarumma returned the best save success rate (77.3%) in Ligue 1 this season and the Italian's performances between the sticks helped secure his spot in the team of the season having earned a WhoScored rating of 7.14. 10 clean sheets also ranked fifth in the division to contribute towards his inclusion.
The first of four representatives for surprise package Brest, Kenny Lala landed a WhoScored rating of 6.97 this season with the 32-year-old assisting three and scoring two for the Pirates. Lala got forward well where required having ranked second for the most accurate crosses, excluding corners (35) in the division. In addition, no player won possession in the defensive third more times than the defender (121) in France's top tier.
Wilfried Singo (Monaco) - 7.15
The best rated defender in Ligue 1 this season, Wilfried Singo returned a WhoScored rating of 7.15 in 2023/24. Singo routinely exhibited his fine reading of the game having made the seventh most interceptions (51) in the division.
Leonardo Belardi (Marseille) - 7.00
Partnering Singo at the heart of the defence, Leonardo Balerdi, like the Monaco man, also made 51 interceptions this season. The Marseille star also made more tackles (79) than any other centre-back, that ranking ninth overall, to land a WhoScored rating of 7.00.
Only one player made more tackles than Bradley Locko (97) in Ligue 1 this season, while the 22-year-old got forward well from left-back for Brest as he completed 56 dribbles, that ranking eighth overall and top of defenders. It was an impressive season for Locko, who managed a WhoScored rating of 7.07.
Teji Savanier (Montpellier) - 7.28
Despite his ill-discipline, Teji Savanier still did enough to manage a WhoScored rating of 7.28 this season. The midfielder created goalscoring chances (91) than any other player in Ligue 1 in 2023/24 as Savanier shone for Montpellier once more.
The second PSG player in the side, Vitinha enjoyed an excellent second season with the French champions having garnered a WhoScored rating of 7.23. The 24-year-old scored seven times and laid on an additional four assists for the Parisian powerhouse. In addition, Vitinha ranked top for passes per game (64.3) of midfielders.
Pierre Lees-Melou (Brest) - 7.22
Rounding off the midfield trio, Pierre Lees-Melou was key as Brest finished third in France's top tier. The 30-year-old made the third most tackles (96) in the division and won possession in the midfield third more times (133) than any other player to nail down his spot in the side.
Romain Del Castillo (Brest) - 7.35
Romain Del Castillo enjoyed a fine campaign for Brest having scored eight and provided an additional eight assists. The 28-year-old ranked second for key passes (89) and third for successful dribbles (75) in a season that saw the winger land a WhoScored rating of 7.35.
Kylian Mbappe claims the Ligue 1 player of the season award having returned a WhoScored rating of 7.71 in his final campaign for PSG. Mbappe finished 2023/24 having scored more goals (27) than any other player, while seven assists was the fifth most.
Aleksandr Golovin (Monaco) - 7.30
Joining Del Castillo and Mbappe on the frontline is the second Monaco player in the XI. Aleksandr Golovin was directly involved in 12 league goals this season, scoring six, while no player made more accurate through balls than the Russian (8) to justify his selection in the side.
