Now the 2018 World Cup is underway, we are going to highlight five players you should consider for your Football INDEX portfolios 24 hours before their matches. Here are our three tips for Wednesday’s group games:
1. GONCALO GUEDES (PORTUGAL VS MOROCCO)
Goncalo Guedes was surprisingly selected to lead the line alongside Cristiano Ronaldo against Spain and is expected to keep Andre Silva out of the side when the Euro 2016 winners face Morocco in Moscow.
The 21-year-old played a direct hand in 14 league goals (five goals, nine assists) during a thoroughly impressive loan spell at Valencia and Marcelino’s side are desperate to secure his services on a full-time basis.
Valencia could face competition for Guedes’ signature, particularly if he impresses at the World Cup. In fact, Liverpool has also been mooted as a potential alternative for Liverpool if they fail to prise Nabil Fekir away from Lyon.
Guedes’ Football INDEX share price has increased marginally over the last week but they will rise further if he can chip in with some goals to ease the pressure on star man Cristiano Ronaldo.
2. RODRIGO BENTANCUR (URUGUAY VS SAUDI ARABIA)
After edging Egypt 1-0 in their group opener, Uruguay will hope to preserve their unbeaten start to the 2018 World Cup when they face Saudi Arabia at the Rostov Arena on Wednesday.
Uruguay are in a great position to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition and will be expected to comfortably beat Saudi Arabia after Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side were thrashed 5-0 by hosts Russia last week.
Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani failed to net against Egypt but will be chomping at the bit to get at a Saudi Arabia defence that looked all at sea in gameweek 1. Suarez has arguably turned in the worst individual display of this summer’s tournament and more will be expected here.
While Uruguay’s front two hog all the limelight, Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is one to keep your eye on. The 20-year-old impressed in patches in their group opener and will hope to feature more prominently for Juventus next season.
Bentancur only started five league games last season but has made a solid start to the World Cup. In fact, only defensive duo Jose Gimenez (9.74) and Diego Godin (8.47) scored a higher WhoScored rating in Uruguay’s opener than Bentancur (7.79).
His Football INDEX share price is currently £1.94 but it has increased 12.35% in the last seven days and should be considered for your portfolios.
3. DIEGO COSTA (SPAIN VS IRAN)
New Spain head coach Fernando Hierro would have been pleased from what he saw by his players despite their opening 3-3 draw with Portugal last week.
Few changes are expected from Spain when they face Iran in their second group game, which means Diego Costa will edge out Rodrigo and Iago Aspas to lead the line.
The Atletico Madrid striker has divided opinion when representing Spain in the past but the 29-year-old was in top form against Portugal, netting twice. He will be confident of adding to his goal tally when Spain face Iran on Wednesday.
His Football INDEX share price is £2.58 and will only increase as the World Cup unfolds. Despite the upheaval Spain had to deal with on the eve of the tournament, they are expected to go far this summer and that will mean plenty of scoring opportunities for Costa.
