Season Review: Are Liverpool best placed to rival City next term?

For all the thrilling football Liverpool have played this season, the fact they finished fourth and 25 points adrift of champions Manchester City is quite alarming. 

It’s true that Liverpool have already beaten City three times in all competitions this season and towards the end of the campaign started to prioritise the Champions League final over their domestic form. 

However, there are still issues to iron out for Jurgen Klopp over the summer, but with Naby Keita due to join up with the club, these are exciting times for Liverpool. 

SUCCESS - MOHAMED SALAH

It feels like an eternity since people questioned whether Liverpool had overspent to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma in the wake of his failed spell at Chelsea. 

But, in just 12 months, Salah has proved to be one of the bargains of the season. The Egypt international has more than repaid the £34m Liverpool spent to prise him back to England.

On the final day of the season, Salah scored his 32nd league goal of the campaign. In doing so, he set a record for the most goals scored in a 38-game Premier League season.

To think Salah has achieved that in his first season at the club begs the question what he will manage in the years to come. 

WHERE TO IMPROVE

All of Liverpool’s players have contributed at some stage this season, so rather than pick out a flop; we will look ahead to where Klopp’s side can improve next season.

After switching between Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius in goal for the last two seasons, Klopp opted to make Karius his undisputed No.1 midway through the 2017/18 campaign.

While Karius’ performances have marginally improved, he is yet to show he is the calibre of goalkeeper required to win the Premier League.

Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for Roma’s Alisson but they appear to have cooled their interest in the Brazilian since then. That shouldn’t deter Klopp’s side from signing a new goalkeeper, however.
