Bundesliga round-up: Borussia Dortmund dominate midweek best XI

 

Borussia Dortmund were absolutely rampant on Wednesday night as they smashed Nuernberg 7-0 to outline their title intentions to move to within two points of league leaders Bayern Munich. Dortmund have made an unbeaten start to the campaign and rightly dominate the Bundesliga team of the week, but it’s a Gladbach star who landed the individual accolade in Germany’s top tier from the midweek action. 

 

Thorgan Hazard was in exceptional form in a 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. The Belgian has had a direct hand in three league goals this season, two of which came on Wednesday night. Hazard’s goal came from one of two shots in the victory and his assist, one of six key passes, that a joint-record return in a Bundesliga match this season. One successful dribble, one tackle and one interception meant the 25-year-old was good value for his man of the match award with a WhoScored rating of 9.21. 

 

Dortmund duo Marco Reus and Thomas Delaney take silver and bronze, respectively, in the top rated Bundesliga performers. Reus was hugely impressive against Nuernberg having had a direct hand in three of the seven goals they scored, netting two goals from four shots and registering one assist from two key passes in a wonderful hour-long outing that saw the German return a WhoScored rating of 9.07. 

 

Delaney, too, had a direct hand in a goal in the victory as he provided one assist from three key passes. Two successful dribbles, one tackle, three interceptions and a 94.1% pass success rate from 102 passes saw the Dane land a WhoScored rating of 8.99.

As for the worst-rated player of the week, Nuernberg centre-back Lukas Muhl secured a WhoScored rating of just 4.90 in the defeat to Dortmund. The 21-year-old made just one tackle over the 90 minutes and failed to make a clearance or win an aerial duel. He picked up a booking for his troubles in a poor showing from the youngster.
