Lukaku and Salah spearhead star-studded Premier League September best XI

 

Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool are the dominant sides in the September team of the month, boasting three players each, while Manchester City and Manchester United each have two representatives in the best XI of those to have made three appearances. 

 

Ederson (Manchester City) - 7.12 

 

Manchester City were the only side not to concede a goal in September as they picked up seven points from their three league outings. With three clean sheets to his name, Ederson occupies the spot between the sticks in the Premier League team of the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.12. 

 

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United) - 7.37 

 

The first of two Manchester United players to make the cut, Aaron Wan-Bissaka earned a WhoScored rating of 7.37 in September as he put in solid showings in meetings with Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa. He made 12 tackles and interceptions combined to secure a place at right-back. 

 

 

Thiago Silva (Chelsea) - 7.84 

 

Two of Thiago Silva's three outings in September were from to outset, with the experienced Brazilian excellent last month. Indeed, Silva earned a WhoScored rating of 7.84, with a standout performance coming in Chelsea's 3-0 win at Tottenham. 14 clearances was a solid return for the 37-year-old to help lock in a spot in the side. 

 

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 7.45

Rounding off the defence is the second Manchester City player in the side. Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea) - 7.78 

 

Of the four goals Mateo Kovacic has directly contributed to in the Premier League this season, three came in September has he scored one and provided two assists for Chelsea. The Croat chipped in with nine tackles and seven successful dribbles, and is the second Blues player in the team of the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.78. 

 

Fabinho (Liverpool) - 7.51 

 

Fabinho has had a direct hand in two league goals this season, scoring one, and both of those came in September. The Brazilan impressed off the ball as only Grant Hanley (10) made more interceptions than the Liverpool star (9) in the Premier League last month to join Kovacic in midfield with a WhoScored rating of 7.51. 

 

Paul Pogba (Manchester United) - 7.56 

 

Rounding off the three-man midfield is Manchester United star Paul Pogba. Two of the Frenchman's seven assists in the Premier League this season came in September, those coming from a total of six key passes. On top of that, only two players completed more dribbles than Pogba (11) to contribute towards a WhoScored rating of 7.56.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 7.85 

 

Mohamed Salah rounds off the Liverpool contingent as he landed a WhoScored rating of 7.85 in September. Salah was one of 10 players to have a direct hand in three league goals last month as he hit the back of the net in meetings with Leeds, Crystal Palace and Brentford. Of his 12 shots, nine were on target, more than any other player, to contribute towards his inclusion. 

 

Ivan Toney (Brentford) - 8.12 

 

With a WhoScored rating of 8.12, Ivan Toney is the Premier League player of the month. Like Salah, Toney had a direct hand in three goals in September, scoring one and providing two assists, the latter more than any other player. The 25-year-old's pair of assists came from seven key passes, ranking among the top 10 players, while the Brenford star won the most aerial duels (21) to cap a memorable month. 

 

Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea) - 7.73 

 

Completing the team of the month is Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian netted twice in September, those coming in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, as Lukaku scored with two of his three shots on target. The 28-year-old was unfortunate not to register an assist, as he made four key passes, while an additional five successful dribbles saw him land a WhoScored rating of 7.73.
