England pair among best rated individual 2022 World Cup performances

 

With the World Cup done and dusted, we decide to take a look back at the best rated performances in Qatar, and there were plenty of memorable displays. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Bukayo Saka all impressed at one stage or another as we run through the top rated outings at the 2022 World Cup. 

 

10. Lionel Messi (8.89) - Argentina (vs France) 

 

It was a long time coming, but Lionel Messi won the World Cup for Argentina as they beat France on penalties on Sunday night. The performance marked Messi's best rated in Qatar as he earned a WhoScored rating of 8.89 against France. The 35-year-old scored with two of his five shots at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, and was unfortunate not to add an assist having made three key passes. An additional two tackles capped the Argentina captain's best display at the World Cup. 

 

9. Robert Lewandowski (8.90) - Poland (vs Saudi Arabia) 

 

Robert Lewandowski played his part in firing Poland to the last-16 as he put in a man of the match performance in their 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia. The Barcelona hitman scored his first World Cup goal of his career in the victory, netting with one of five shots, while his only key pass resulted in an assist. With four successful dribbles to his name, it saw Lewandowski return a WhoScored rating of 8.90. 

 

8. Kylian Mbappe (8.92) - France (vs Argentina) 

 

There were mixed fortunes for Kylian Mbappe in the World Cup final. The France star bagged a hat-trick against France, and scored his penalty in the shootout, and it was enough for Mbappe to secure the Golden Boot, though France lost to Argentina on Sunday. With four dribbles to his name, the French striker returned a WhoScored rating of 8.92. 

 

7. Denzel Dumfries (9.01) - Netherlands (vs USA) 

 

As the Netherlands defeated USA in the last-16, Denzel Dumfries was superb at right wing-back, directly contributing to all three goals in their 3-1 win. Dumfries provided assists for Memphis Depay and Daley Blind in the first half, and got on the scoresheet with 10 minutes to play, those coming from respective returns of two key passes and one shot. The Inter man also made a clearance off the line in the second half to help earn a WhoScored rating of 9.01.

6. Daley Blind (9.16) - Netherlands (vs USA) 

 

Remaining with the Netherlands' 3-1 win over USA, Daley Blind earned the star man award from the victory as he was directly involved in two of their three goals. Blind doubled the Oranje's advantage shortly before the break, and then provided the assist for Dumfries' late goal, those coming from respective returns of two shots and one key pass. The 32-year-old defended well, too, as he made seven tackles to help earn a WhoScored rating of 9.16. 

 

5. Bukayo Saka (9.20) - England (vs Iran) 

 

England got their World Cup campaign off to a blistering start as they smashed Iran 6-2, with Bukayo Saka putting in a star man shift down the right for the Three Lions. Saka scored twice from three shots in the resounding victory, while one clearance, one tackles and one interception saw the 21-year-old yield a WhoScored rating of 9.20. 

 

4. Jamal Musiala (9.24) - Germany (vs Costa Rica) 

 

Jamal Musiala was unfortunate to not score at the World Cup, but his performance against Costa Rica will be fondly remembered. Yes, Germany crashed out of the competition despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica, yet Musiala put in a world class display, as he mustered eight shots and completed a whopping 13 dribbles in the victory as the teenager returned a WhoScored rating of 9.24. 

 

3. Marcus Rashford (9.24) - England (vs Wales) 

 

England needed to avoid defeat to book their spot in the last-16 when they took on Wales in round off their Group B campaign, but they made light work of the Dragons, earning a 3-0 win. Marcus Rashford was a star man in the victory with a WhoScored rating of 9.24, as he scored twice from six shots, including the first direct free-kick of the tournament. Three successful dribbles contributed towards the man of the match award for the England frontman. 

 

2. Kylian Mbappe (9.79) - France (vs Poland) 

 

Kylian Mbappe saved his best performance for the last-16 as he directly contributed towards all three France goals in their 3-1 win over Poland. Mbappe beat Wojciech Szczesny with two of five shots against Poland, and provided the assist for Olivier Giroud's record breaking goal, that coming from one of two key passes. An additional five dribbles meant the French forward was good value for his WhoScored rating of 9.79.

1. Goncalo Ramos (10.0) - Portugal (vs Switzerland) 

 

Goncalo Ramos became the first, and only, player to return a perfect WhoScored 10 rating at the World Cup as he thrived in Portugal's 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16. Ramos bagged a hat-trick against Switzerland, an impressive feat on his first ever start for Portugal, and provided an assist in the resounding victory from respective returns of six shots and two key passes. On top of that, the young striker also won three aerial duels and made two clearances in what was the best rated performance of the 2022 World Cup.
