Champions League winner leaves Man City for Barcelona

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Ilkay Gundogan from Champions League winners Manchester City.

Gundogan was instrumental in City's treble success last season, netting twice in the FA Cup final and playing a starring role in their title triumph.

Gundogan's contract expires this week, and while City were hoping to keep him on at the Etihad Stadium, Barcelona's offer was more appealing for the Germany international.

"FC  Barcelona and Ilkay Gündoğan have reached an agreement for the German international to sign for the Catalans now that his contract with Manchester City has ended," a statement read on Barcelona's official website.

"He will join for two seasons, through to 30 June 2025, with the option to stay for one more year. His buyout clause has been set at 400 million euros."

Gundogan leaves City having won 14 trophies during his spell in England following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

City are now set to step up their interest in Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic, who has been heavily linked with a summer switch to the Premier League champions.
