Manchester United close in on sensational Varane deal

Manchester United are close to agreeing personal terms with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, claims Manchester Evening News.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have switched their attention to wrapping up a deal for Varane after completing Jadon Sancho's move from Borussia Dortmund.

Varane has spent the last decade at Madrid but wants a new challenge and has rejected the club's offer of a new contract.

United were beaten to Varane's signature by Madrid back in 2011 but are now closing in on the World Cup winner.

Madrid want to cash in on Varane now rather than let him leave for nothing next summer and hope to command in the region of €50m (£42.6m) for his signature.

United appear to have a clear-run at signing Varane after Paris Saint-Germain signed his former Madrid defensive partner Sergio Ramos earlier this month.

Varane reportedly wants to head straight to Manchester after his holiday rather than return to Madrid for any pre-season training.

United are close to striking an agreement with Varane's representatives over personal terms and are waiting for Madrid's official demands before submitting a formal bid.

Of the 191 players to contest 50 or more aerial duels in La Liga last season, Varane had the best success rate (76%).
