Man Utd on red alert for cut-price Varane

Real Madrid will look to sell Raphael Varane in the summer if he fails to agree a new deal before then, claims Marca.

Varane, who has recently changed representation, will only have 12 months left to run on his current Madrid deal at the end of the season.

Talks are yet to get underway over an extension but Madrid have made it clear they want his future sorted sooner rather than later.

Previously thought of as one of the best defenders in the world, Varane has suffered from a loss of form over the last 12 months.

Manchester United have previously been linked with a £100m move for the 27-year-old and are keen to strengthen their defence at the end of the season.

With Madrid favourites to land Bayern Munich wantaway David Alaba on a free transfer in the summer, Varane could make way.

It is reported Madrid would only look to command in the region of €50m (£43.9m) for Varane's services if he does not agree a new contract.

Even though Madrid could risk losing Varane on a free transfer at the end of next season, €50m still seems a very modest fee for the 2018 World Cup winner.

Varane has committed four errors leading to an opposition goal in 14 appearances in the Champions League since the start of last season, twice as many as any other player.
