Atletico Madrid ace wants to join Manchester United

Manchester United have been given a huge boost in their pursuit of solving their defensive woes at centre back with news Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez wants to join Jose Mourinho’s side, claims Manchester Evening News.

Gimenez, 21, has been strongly linked with a move to United throughout the season after failing to establish himself as a first-team regular under Diego Simeone this season.

Jose Mourinho is expected to strengthen his defensive options once again in the summer after failing to settle on a regular centre-back pairing this season, particularly after Phil Jones and Chris Smalling returned from the recent international break injured.

Gimenez will only have 12 months left to run on his existing deal with Atletico at the end of the season, but United will be reluctant to match his £56m buy-out clause given they could theoretically get him for nothing the following summer.

The Uruguay international has only started seven league games this season after dropping below Stefan Savic in the pecking order to partner Diego Godin at the heart of Atletico’s defence.

Interestingly, Atletico have not lost a single league game Gimenez has started this season, although only three of those seven matches have results in wins.
