How Salah went from Chelsea flop to Liverpool legend

Mohamed Salah is now Liverpool’s record goalscorer in the Premier League. His double against Manchester United in the historic 7-0 win over Manchester United saw the Egypt international leapfrog Robbie Fowler into top spot with 129 goals in just 205 appearances.

The goalscorer supreme will likely end the season as the club’s fifth-highest goalscorer ever. He is currently seventh on the list, five goals behind Robbie Fowler, who occupies the sixth spot, and eight behind Steven Gerrard.

Salah has normalised these goalscoring exploits following his £37million move to Anfield during the 2017 summer transfer window. Dubbed a Chelsea flop following a forgettable stint at Stamford Bridge, many eyebrows were raised when it was revealed Liverpool were prepared to break their transfer record to bring him back to the Premier League.

He scored on his debut and he’s not stopped scoring since.

His goals have fired Liverpool to success, with Jurgen Klopp’s side winning every trophy imaginable with the former Roma winger as their main man in attack. Salah has also claimed three Golden Boots during his time on Merseyside, while also setting a Premier League record for most goals scored in a 38-game campaign.

But, in his post-match interview following the dismantling of Manchester United at Old Trafford, Klopp was quick to lavish praise on his No11 for his record-breaking achievement.

“Mo Salah achieved tonight something really, really special – we should not forget that just because we are used to him scoring a lot of goals. He is a very special, very special boy and he should be really proud of that.”

The 30-year-old, who signed a new deal with the club in the summer, gave a candid interview to Sky Sports after the game yesterday in which he revealed he always had this record in mind.

“It’s very special, I can’t lie. This record was in my mind since I came here. I think after my first season I was always chasing it.”

Earlier in the week, Salah became only the second Liverpool player after Ian Rush to score 20 goals for the Reds in six successive seasons when he netted in the 2-0 win over Wolves.

He has really come to the fore for the Reds over recent weeks as Klopp’s side look to make a surprise,  late dash for a top-four finish.

Following a run of three losses and a draw across a four-match span, Liverpool have taken 13 points from the last 15 on offer to climb up to fifth in the table. They are now just three points behind Spurs, the team currently occupying the final Champions League spot, with a game in hand.

During this fruitful five-match period for the Reds, Salah has found the back of the net in wins over Everton, Wolves and Manchester United. He also assisted in the victory over Newcastle United. His tally for the Premier League campaign now stands at 11 goals and seven assists across 2,229 minutes. The one-time Fiorentina flyer is averaging a goal or an assist every 123 minutes in the English top flight this term. It is an even more impressive record when you consider Liverpool are in a state of flux right now.

He is part of a new-look attack made up of Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez. Sadio Mane left in the summer while both Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino have had injury issues meaning Salah has had to forge new understandings at the same time as adapting his role to suit the new arrivals.

Yet it clicked for the trio against the Red Devils with all three of them netting doubles in one of the most one-sided matches in the history of the Premier League. However, it was fitting that it was Salah who reigned supreme on the day with two assists to go alongside his two goals. He earned a WhoScored rating of 10 in what was something of a statement performance by the No11.

All of the talk heading into the game centred on how Liverpool would set up to stop Marcus Rashford with the England international in the form of his life since returning from the World Cup. Salah reminded everyone exactly why he’s one of the most feared forwards in Premier League history and he extended his unbelievable record against Manchester United to 10 goals and four assists in his last seven appearances against them.

The Chelsea flop is a fully-fledged Liverpool legend.
